Indonesia held several International Conference of Islamic Scholars, in
Jakarta, in the years 2004, 2006 and 2008.
With the growing role of the media in building opinion, there is a need to have
balance between promoting tolerance and the freedom of expression. In this
context, Indonesia and Norwegian Government sponsored the GIMD in
September 2006, and held the GIMD II in Oslo in June 2007 and GIMD III in
Bali in May 2008.
Indonesia participated and contributed in the Special NAM Ministerial Meeting
(SNAMMM) on Interfaith Dialogue and Cooperation for Peace and
Development in Manila, in 16-18 March 2010. SNAMMM adopted Manila
Declaration which provide framework for NAM to strengthen cooperation in
interfaith and cultural dialogue.
Indonesia participated in the meetings of ASEM Interfaith Dialogue, including
the latest one held in Madrid, Spain, in May 2010, and will participate in the
next meeting to be held in Manila, the Philippines, in October 2011.
Indonesia held several International Conferences of Islamic Scholars (ICIS), in
Jakarta, in 2004, in 2006 and 2008. The latest ICIS activity was conducted a
“National Workshop on The Modernization of Indonesia Moslem Community
within the Context of National Integration” on 18-19 February 2009.
Indonesia continue to support the Alliance of Civilization (AoC) and its efforts
at the multilateral levels in the area of interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
Within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, the Director
General for Information and Public Diplomacy was appointed as national focal
point of AoC to promote interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
Indonesia commitment to maintain global peace and security is also reflected
on several bilateral interfaith dialogues and co-operations, such as: Indonesia
and Austria Joint Statement on Cooperation in the Areas of Dialogue of
Cultures and Religions in June 2010, the 2nd Indonesia-Lebanon Interfaith
Dialogue on 2010, as well as bilateral interfaith dialogues with other European
countries (Hungary, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, Serbia, and
Greece) in 2010 and 2011.
Indonesia continues its initiatives to establish interfaith and interculturai
dialogue and inter media, and also continue to encourage tangible results in
the form of cooperation at the grass-roots level, such as scholarship programs,
exchange/visit programmes among religious and culture leaders, as well as
training and education for the mass media.
